English opaque twist stemmed glass, circa 1800
Georgian glasses were a fraction of the size they are today - there are several reasons for this including the tax on wine which continued until the mid 19th century. Originally the measure was defined as ⅛ of a pint, or 2 ounces (2 ½ ounces in the Imperial System). Prior to 1800 it was 1 ½ fluid ounces. With the industrial revolution glasses could be mass produced and more standard in size and shape. In the 18th century, glass blowers would add spiral patterns in the stem in the form of bubbles (air twist) or white or coloured threads (opaque twist).
