Turkmen camel trapping (asmalyk) or bag face, circa 1870, with no restoration.

$625.00
Turkmen camel trapping (asmalyk) or bag face weaving from middle Amu Darya region, Turkestan. Unusual design, circa 1870, with no restoration.
The Turkmen of Central Asia led a semi-nomadic pastoral lifestyle and migrated seasonally by camel which necessitated portable dwellings (yurts). They contained their personal and household belongings in storage bags, finely woven with intricate designs incorporating a tribal göl, or medallion. These weavings were often created by young girls as part of the wedding dowry to establish their new home, or to decorate the bridal camel. This piece could have been used as either a tent bag or a camel trapping (asmalyk).
