Horse Portrait at Lansdowne Racetrack,1930
watercolour, signed and dated lower right "C. Warburton Young, 1930"
Provenance: Austin C. Taylor Estate of Shannon Mews, Vancouver
This horse portrait is set at the old Lansdowne Park Racetrack in Richmond, BC, where Lansdowne Mall now stands. The portrait comes from the Estate of philanthropist and horseracing enthusiast Austin C. Taylor, who was instrumental in the development of thoroughbred racing in British Columbia and was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame Builders category. He was involved with breeding through his A.C.T Stock Farm in Milner, the center or activity in Langley where he assembled an impressive stable. His racing stable competed in Vancouver as well as throughout the US, and in 1936 his Indian Broom set a world record and went on to win a number of races as well as placing third in the Kentucky Derby. Taylor had a long and honoured career as a mining magnate, financier, and sportsman, and bought Shannon Mews from the Rogers family in 1936.
