Mount Cheops looking North from below the Illecillewaet Glacier
John Hammond is one of Canada’s earliest celebrated historical artists. Born in Montreal, he decided at an early age to become an artist. He traveled widely, returning to Canada in 1871 when he joined the Transcontinental Survey party who were making
preliminary studies for the building of a railway. Sir William Van Horne, president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, was a great admirer of Hammond’s work and commissioned him to create murals for the railway’s hotels and offices across Canada. This charming view depicts Mount Cheops looking North from below the Illecillewaet Glacier and was exhibited at the Owens Art Gallery in 1881.
