Model ship and diorama inside a clear glass light bulb, early 20th century

$2,200.00

Model ship and diorama, installed inside a clear glass light bulb and mounted on fitted wooden stand. Handwritten paper inside reads: "Made by Karl Schneider P.O.W. No. 240 Morrisey, B.C. Canada 1914-1917". The diorama depicts a harbour scene with port, most likely Halifax, Nova Scotia, as well as the British Brig "Betty", which sailed under the command of Captain Robert Warden and brought immigrants to Halifax as part of the English attempt to colonize the Nova Scotia territory. Karl Schreiber was a German prisoner-of-war who was detained in Canada during the first World War. He constructed intricate dioramas while interned as POW No. 240 in a civilian camp in Morrissey, B.C. from circa 1914-1917.
